This beautiful gourd maraca is handmade in the “mates burilados” tradition, it it “painted” using a precise and concentrated flame, and then the flower and bird design is carved on top.
Mates burilados are produced by talented artisans in the city of Cochas, in the centre of the Andes. This was traditionally a process used for making plates and bowls, but now is mostly used for more elaborate decorative gourds. These artisans work with Manos Amigas.
